This week I have on the menu two loaves of country white bread, macaroni and cheese, breaded chicken nuggets and blueberry pancakes (for first day of school). Now that I look at this line up I realize that I’m about to go to the store and buy the most butter I have in one trip. On the list is wheat germ and veggies, so back off.
Next Monday the 23rd is the first day of home schooling. I’m planning something special for that day, Noah says he wants to have a hug party where we hug a lot, much simpler than I was planning so I’m going to give the kid his wish. I’ve gone back and forth about what to cover, what not to cover through the year but the hardest part is how to pull my head out of the traditional process of teaching (desks and workbooks). I find myself drawn to some curricula, but there’s part of me that isn’t at all interested in using one. I am kind of looking for a guide or book on how to introduce kids to mathematics. I had bad experiences with the way the subject was introduced and taught to me, and since it’s something they will be building on for years, I think I’m more concerned about it than any other subject.
Another overwhelming part of homeschooling is that it’s going to force me to be more regimented about my time than I typically am. I know that I need to put effort into developing some habits for my health and kids. I don’t want to live by a schedule but I do want to be a good model so that my kids can grow up and be as anal retentive about the most unimportant things as possible.
